Marco Polo (1254 - 1324) - Venetian trader who became known through the reports about his trip to China.Though he was not the first European to reach China, Marco Polo was the first to leave a detailed chronicle of his experience. This book inspired Christopher Columbus and many other travellers. He also influenced European cartography. Wood engraving, published in 1888.

Arrival of Marco Polo on Hormuz (Persian Gulf). He visited the island twice in 1272 and 1293, as described in his travelogue. Facsimile (wood engraving) according to the manuscript "Le livre des merveilles de Marco Polo (The Adventures of Marco Polo)", 15th century, in the National Library of Paris (Bibliothèque nationale de France), published in 1888.

Kublai was the 5th Khagan (Great Khan) of the Mongol Empire, reigning from 1260 to 1294. He also founded the Yuan dynasty in China as a conquest dynasty in 1271, and ruled as the first Yuan emperor until his death in 1294. According to legend, Kublai Khan received the brothers Maffeo and Niccolò Polo from Venice and later his son Marco, who was educated in Kublai's court, learned Chinese and Mongolian customs, and actually became one of Kublai's favored diplomats. Wood engraving, published in 1888.
